The Saint Vladimir’s Seminary Chorale will present a one-hour program of sacred vocal music dedicated to the memory of the Very Reverend Dr Ivan Moody at 2 pm on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at St Anthony Orthodox Church 385 Ivy Lane, Bergenfield, NJ 07621. Fr Ivan was a world-renowned composer and conductor, an affiliated faculty member of the Institute of Sacred Arts (ISA) at St Vladimir’s Seminary, and the founding Chairman of the International Society for Orthodox Church Music (ISOCM).
The concert will feature the Chorale, a mixed-voice ensemble of Seminary students and staff, singing mainly choral works by Fr Ivan. These were selected and will primarily be conducted by ISA Associate Director Alexander Lingas, Professor of Music at St Vladimir’s and a longtime collaborator with Fr Ivan in both music and scholarship. Anchoring the program is the First Stasis of the composer’s monumental Akathistos Hymn (1998), a complete setting of the English translation of this famous kontakion to the Mother of God by the late Metropolitan Kallistos (Ware) of Diokleia. Other works include excerpts of Fr Ivan’s Greek Liturgy (2014) and his settings of hymns by two renowned medieval women composers: the Troparion of Kassiani (1999) by the ninth-century Byzantine abbess Kassia and O quam mirabilis (2006) by Hildegard of Bingen (ca. 1098–1179).
This concert in tribute to the memory of Fr Ivan Moody follows the release of a special episode on the Luminous podcast, featuring friends and fellow scholars and musicians reflecting on Fr Ivan’s life and impact.
